Green Business Spotlight: Cyber Acoustics

Cyber Acoustics Headquarters Environment, Social and Governance Team Members: Alexander Macleay, Stephen Murphy, Jaq Boden

Cyber Acoustics, one of our newest Green Businesses, is excited to join the growing network of organizations in Clark County that are prioritizing sustainability in the workplace. We caught up with Alexander Macleay, Product Marketing Manager and Environmental, Social and Governance Specialist at Cyber Acoustics, for an in-depth look at what sustainability means to their organization and their commitment to incorporate environmental stewardship into their daily operations and employee culture. To learn more about Cyber Acoustics, visit their Green Business listing here.

Can you describe the overall sustainability messaging of your organization?

Alexander: "Living and operating sustainably is imperative to ensure that the earth and the natural world can coexist with humans. We are committed to a continued process of innovation, adaptation, and change to not only lessen our impact but also better our planet.

Sustainability is the ability to maintain a balance between the natural environment and the needs of society, without compromising either. It's about looking for ways to reduce environmental impacts and promote human well-being. We are committed to ongoing sustainability and will continue to make every effort to ensure we are doing our part."

What strides have you made in the past year to achieve your sustainability goals?

Alexander: "Updating lights to more energy efficient options, tightening and expanding our network of recyclers, transitioning away from single use products in the office, installing a compost bucket for food waste at our headquarters, continued redesigns of our packaging, and the implementation of more than 50 percent recycled plastics into our entire line of education headsets."

What measures do you take to minimize waste generation within your business?

Alexander: "We use energy efficient lighting in our U.S. based office and warehouse, encourage hybrid and remote schedules, offer a no-cost recycling solution for end-of-life headsets, partner with local recyclers and refurbishers for all e-waste, styrofoam, plastic film, batteries, lighting, and all other points of possible recycling. We also eliminated single use plastics from our packaging where possible and have implemented recycled plastics into our headset manufacturing. We encourage composting in our break room and have a compost bucket for employees to use."

How do you engage employees in sustainable initiatives? What steps have you taken to promote a culture of sustainability among your staff?

Alexander: "All employees have had some form of training on sustainability, recycling, and composting. We have clearly marked bins throughout our office and warehouse to help employees place items in the correct place for proper disposal. We also encourage staff to bring recycled goods into our warehouse that are difficult to recycle on the curb. In addition, we purchased customized reusable cups for each employee to use in the office, as well as, provide dishes and utensils in our kitchen. We installed a dishwasher to ensure these items are cleaned daily and are always available for employee use."

Please tell us any other ways your company supports our community.

Cyber Acoustics headset recycle program returned collection box.

Alexander: "We offer a no-cost headset recycling program that accepts wired and wireless headsets, headphones, and earbuds from any brand. We distribute collection boxes to our customers, and we then cover the cost of shipping back to our office where we properly sort them for reuse or recycling."

What are your company's future sustainability goals for 2025 and beyond? How do you plan to hold your company accountable for achieving them?

Alexander: "Every improvement, big or small, matters, and together they create an impact greater than the sum of their parts. We remain committed to sustainability and will continue making every effort to do our part. In 2025, we plan to create informative website content on sustainable living and working, explore more efficient shipping routes, expand awareness of our headset recycling program to assist customers with their own sustainability initiatives and incorporate sustainability education into our marketing and training. We look forward to building a more sustainable future, one step at a time."

What have you done to reduce the use of hazardous or dangerous waste in your workplace?

Alexander: "We send all e-waste to an R2V3 certified recycler who handles the materials in an appropriate and accountable way."

How has your organization embraced reuse?

Alexander: "We encourage employees to grab what they need from a shared supply area and refurbish electronic returns to re-use in the office. In addition, we have a fully stocked kitchen with dishes and utensils, and we purchased customized reusable cups for each employee."

Share a challenge that your organization had to overcome on your path to sustainability and describe strategies that led you to success.

Alexander: "Time is the largest obstacle. We are a small team with a large, complicated, and diverse workload. We often need to have deliverables yesterday, so finding the time to work in sustainability efforts proved to be a challenge. With all the scheduling troubles, communication and coordination were the key to progress. We divided the work up among a team and dedicated meeting times to determine how best to move sustainable initiatives forward tangentially with our active projects and production cycles."

Is there any additional information you'd like us to include in your business spotlight?

ALEXANDER: "I would like to give a special shout out to our recyclers Green Century Recycling, Paper People, and Waste Connections. The more breadcrumbs we can add for others to find resources, the better."
