Green Biz Spotlight: WSU Vancouver

WSU Vancouver, a certified Green Business since 2017, is a prime example of a green campus. Students and faculty practice many levels of sustainability on campus and abroad. Named a "Tree Campus USA" in 2016 by the Arbor Day Foundation, WSUV has met many standards to promote healthy trees and student involvement in tree conservation. To further engage students and the community in sustainability, WSUV hosts annual events for Earth Day and Arbor Day.

To protect Mill Creek that runs through campus, WSUV established natural wetland habitat in their bioswales, minimizing polluted runoff and providing important wildlife habitat. Their innovative stormwater designs and other grounds management practices earned them a "Salmon Safe" certification from the Pacific Rivers Council. Conservation of their 350 acres of land has always been a priority for WSUV. Families of deer and coyotes are often spotted on campus, and their 6 miles of nature trails are open for everyone to use.

In addition to their impressive nature space, their urban features use new technology for energy efficiency and water conservation. Campus buildings use energy-efficient heating, cooling, and lighting systems. Overall, their facilities team works to improve sustainability everyday whenever they can through reducing energy needs, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, reducing waste, improving recycling, and more. Becoming a certified Green Business made sense for WSUV because they were already progressive in sustainability and Clark County Green Business certification gives them the local recognition they deserve.
