Green Business Spotlight: Niche Wine Bar

In 2013, Niche Wine Bar became one of the first certified Green Businesses in downtown Vancouver. From the very beginning, Leah Jackson, owner of Niche, has modeled green business principles and make every effort to incorporate thoughtful elements into her business that minimize the wine bar's environmental footprint.

Take-out and dine-in options currently include small plates, sandwiches, and wine. The food menu features meat and cheese plates as well as vegetarian options. Wine is sourced from around the world and locally from Oregon and Washington. One of the current wine selections from Oregon is also Salmon Safe certified. These wines are from vineyards that are managed in a way that protects local water quality and biodiversity.

A customer may not even notice the small details and elements that make Niche an environmentally responsible business. Repurposed furniture enhances the atmosphere and proves that reuse can be cool, and a carefully curated menu ensures that very little waste goes to the landfill. Recycling is a given, and occasionally even corks are collected for reuse. Increased energy efficiency was achieved by switching to LED lighting.

Like many restaurants and bars, Niche Wine Bar made changes this year due to COVID-19 and now has some new processes and business hours in place. Reservations for indoor seating are available for parties when everyone is from the same household, and outdoor seating is available for all parties.

Despite current challenges, Niche Wine Bar has plenty to celebrate. Niche participates in Vancouver's First Friday art walk and features a unique art gallery to showcase local artists. A rotation of artwork is featured in the restroom, affectionately called the Loo-vre. There are also upcoming events planned to commemorate their 10th anniversary!
